Sidney Powell is an American lawyer and former federal prosecutor best known for her role in many efforts to overturn the 2021 U.S. presidential election. The most notable of these challenges was the case she represented on behalf of voting rights advocates challenging the constitutionality of Florida’s Gingles Law. The law, which passed in the Florida House, denies voters the right to have a regular primary election for president. Although the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case, the lower courts upheld it. As a result, President Bush chose to appoint Powell as the head of the Department of Justice’s civil rights division. Sidney Powell has also represented Black Americans accused of racial profiling in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens. In one court filing she accused white officials of engaging in a “systematic pattern of racial discrimination” against blacks. She specifically cited an example of such harassment in a case in New York in which a police officer arrested an African American defendant on charges of misdemeanor DWI.
